Galston Gorge Outdoor Education Camp

Year 3 is currently at the Galston Gorge Crusader’s site  for our outdoor education camp. We were blessed by beautiful weather today and all of Year 3 has had a wonderful first day filled with many exciting experiences.

When we arrived we enjoyed a yummy donut and drink before getting straight into our first activity. We have each been placed into a small group and will rotate around 4 different activities over the course of the two days. These activities are: pole climb, archery, initiative games and score orienteering. Each of these provides some unique challenges that requires us to “Dare to ………….”

We have all risen to the challenges and are proud of how we were willing to move out of our comfort zone and try something new and challenging.

The night finished with an exciting game of indoor spotlight but with a massive twist.

What a day, awesome activities, scrumptious food and all this with our wonderfully supportive friends. It’s time for bed, we are looking forward to all that camp has to offer tomorrow.

Chocolate Capers

Last week Year 3 was set an exciting science challenge. We had to design an experiment to determine if dairy milk chocolate or white chocolate melts the fastest. We could use any of the following items: 2 plastic teaspoons, 2 metal teaspoons, 2 paper plates, 2 pieces of aluminium foil and a piece of dairy milk and white chocolate.
Working in pairs we conducted some research and decided upon our hypothesis. It was then the fun began. Many different experiments were designed but we all used our knowledge that metals are good conductors of heat, so the plastic teaspoons were largely discarded in favour of the metal ones. Fortunately it was a sunny day, so we made use of the suns warmth.
We discovered that the milk chocolate melts a lot faster. When we reflected on how the chocolate melted we realised that the suns electromagnetic waves (radiation) heated the chocolate and the metal spoon. Some of the heat from the metal spoon was conducted into the chocolate as it was at a lower temperature. This helped it melt more rapidly.
We all enjoyed it, but most importantly learned a lot.

Visit to the Science Labs

(Apologies this was not published earlier due to some technical issues)

On Thursday, Year 3 went up to the Senior School to conduct some experiments in the.Science Lab. When we arrived we put on safety goggles and protective apron as fast as we could. Boy we were excited!

One of the experiments we did was the Melting Race. We had cubes of chocolate, metal, ice, butter, and cheese and were interested to find out which one would melt the fastest on a stove. We hypothesised that the ice would melt the fastest but we were wrong.  You might like to try it out to see what actually melted the fastest. 

We observed carefully and recorded our observations on a record sheet. We learned that the melting race was not a very fair experiment because the cubes were all different sizes. We also learnt that there can be only one variable in a science experiment.

A second experiment we conducted helped us to understand how heat is transferred from one substance to another and that some materials are better conductors of heat than others.

We had lots of fun and really hope we could visit the lab again!

Heat Energy

Year 3  love to learn new things, especially when we are able to have  a lot of fun in the process. This week we conducted an experiment to investigate heat energy.

This was a really easy experiment but we learned so much. We used three glasses of water, each containing 150mL of water. One glass had cold water, another room temperature water and the third hot water.  We then placed a drop of red food colouring into each glass and observed what happened. As can be seen from the photos below the food dye reacted very differently in each glass of water.

We found that the dye in the cold water moved very  slowly and hardly spread around the glass., with a lot  of the dye falling to the bottom of the glass. The food dye placed in the room temperature water spread slowly and some of the dye settled on the bottom of the glass. The food dye placed in the hot water spread quite quickly throughout the glass, except that it did not mix all the way to the bottom of the glass.

The results of this experiment confirmed the research we had conducted. Hot particles move a lot faster than cold particles, this is the reason for the dye spreading so much quicker in the hot water and so slowly in the cold water.

Fizzics Incursion

The term has commenced with a flurry of excitement and activity in Year 3. The transdisciplinary theme for our fourth Unit of Inquiry for the year is How the World Works.  Our central idea is Scientists investigate and experiment to test hypotheses. To launch this unit we had a visit from Fizzics Incursion. We were able to participate in wide range of experiments. We acted as scientists, by determining the purpose of our experiments, developing hypotheses (our reasoned predictions) , investigating in a structured manner, observing the results and thinking carefully to draw conclusions about what happened.

One of the experiments we conducted involved placing some bicarbonate soda into a balloon and attaching it to the top of a bottle containing white vinegar.  The bicarbonate soda was then gently shaken into the bottle and mixed with the white vinegar. Shortly after bubbles of carbon dioxide started to form in the bottle and then the balloon started to inflate. Do you know why?

Another experiment was to place three different coloured skittles in a triangular shape in a round plastic bowl. We then added 150mL of water and observed what happened. The colour dissolved off the skittles but to our amazement the colours did not mix. We then carefully placed a sugar cube in the middle of the three skittles and once again observed what happened. This time the colours started to mix. Can you explain why?  We know and would  love to hear your thoughts.

World’s Biggest Morning Tea

On Friday 24th of June (the last day of Term 2) we participated  in the World’s Biggest Morning Tea. During our school’s version of this event students were invited to spend their lunchtime participating in fun activities such as: venturing into haunted houses, creating and decorating, going on jumping castles, eating doughnuts on a string, trying their luck in raffles, spinning wheels for prizes and much much more. There was also a range of amazing foods which included curries, pies, sushi, cupcakes, lollies and more. (I can’t list them all because then your devices probably will freeze up!!!) The World’s Biggest Morning Tea. was hosted by senior students and teachers. Throughout the lunch break students were buzzing around like excited bees.

Olympians Visit the Junior School

On Monday we were very fortunate to have Lisa Darmanin and Jason Waterhouse visit the Junior School. Lisa and Jason will be representing Australia at Rio 2016  in the Nacra 17 Mixed Multihull sailing competition. This will be their first Olympics but they have already won silver and gold medals at the last two world championships. We were privileged to hear about their sailing journeys and how they are preparing for the Olympic sailing competition that starts on 10th August. They will be racing 3 times a day for ten days. If they finish in the top ten they will compete in a final race to decide who the medalists will be. After returning to class we decided that Lisa and Jason displayed the PYP Leaner Attributes. Here are some examples we of how we can see them applying five of the attributes.

  • Risk -Taker:  By giving it a go  and trying their very best
  • Principled:  Even though they are determined to win they support and encourage their friends from New Zealand who are their competitors
  • Inquirers: As they work out the best way to navigate the winds on the course
  • Balanced: Even though they have to work hard in training they still take time to relax and enjoy things outside of sailing
  • Communicators: As they talk with each other and plan race tactics both before and during a race.

In finishing Lisa and Jason encouraged us to all chase our dreams no matter what they are. To succeed they urged us to give everything we do 100% and to practise hard.

Who We Are

We are now well into our third unit of inquiry for the year. Our central idea is “Celebrations and Commemorations show our diversity as Australians.” As part of the unit we have been investigating the cultural backgrounds of our families and drawing up our family trees. It has been very interesting to find out who our ancestors were, what they did and where they came from. We were fascinated to find that out of the 43 mothers in our grade 20 were born outside of Australia.

Each classes plotted on a world map where any of our parents or grandparents came from.

Currently we are researching to find out about celebrations related to our cultures, or how different celebrations are observed around the world.  To do this we have been formulating deep open ended questions to help guide our research. We look forward to sharing some of our findings.

Meet Letty

Year 3 have recently entered the world of the 1840’s with Letty. We have discovered that this era was quite different to now. 

In this wonderful book (written by Alison Lloyd) Letty’s big sister, Lavinia, is ready to set sail for New South Wales from England in the hope of finding a better life.  Letty is sad about this as she loves her sister deeply even though she can be quite bossy. Just before she boards the ship Lavina decides she needs to go the the bathroom. Her Papa and Letty initially stay with her luggage chest. Lavina is taking a long time and the ship is due to sail. Letty’s Papa decides he needs to go and find Lavina and he leaves Letty watching the chest on the dock with strict instructions “Don’t leave it for anything.”

While she is waiting the ship’s crew take Lavina’s luggage chest and put it with all the other luggage on board The Duchess. Following instructions Letty sneaks on board the ship to stay with the luggage. To her horror she soon realises the ship is setting sail and she is still on board. Letty eventually finds Lavinia and together they try to explain to the crew what has happened but they are told they she must stay on board.

We are so keen to keep reading this marvellous book.There are so many questions to ask and answer. Get hooked with this addictive, fantastic read. (Written by Ruby in 3A)

The Bakery Challenge

This week in Maths we have been undertaking a number of investigations to explore how we can use the skills we have developed in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have had a lot of fun with these tasks and learned how important it is to work in an organised manner, to lay our work out carefully and to look for patterns. We thought we would share one of our favourite problems with you. Can you solve it?  We really loved eating the cakes at the end of the session.

1. You need to determine how much it will cost to bake some cup cakes using the information supplied below.

2. Design cake boxes to hold them so that multiple boxes could be easily stacked for transport to the shops. Each box could have one or more layers. How many boxes can you design?
